Faten Hamama was an Egyptian film and television actress. She was an icon who emphasized the importance of female counterpart in the Egyptian cinema as well as society. She made her first screen appearance in 1939 when she was just seven years old. Her first lead role was in Malak al-Rahma (1946) at age 15. Before the 1950s, the actress had leading roles in about 30 films.
She commenced the golden era of the Egyptian cinema industry i.e. 1950s with her stunning performance in ‘Lak Yawm Ya Zalem’ (1952). This was followed by a number of films including 'Al-Ustazah Fatimah' (1952), ‘A'isha’ (1953), ‘Athar Fi al-Rimal’ (1954), 'Al-Malak al-Zalem' (1954), ‘Maw'ed Ma' al-Sa'adah’ (1954), 'Tareeq al-Amal' (1957) and ‘Al-Tareeq al-Masdood’ (1958). Faten Hamama ended the decade with ‘Doaa al-Karawan’ (1959) which is considered to be one of the most successful Egyptian films till date.
During the 1970s, her most significant movie was ‘Oridu Hallan’ (1975) whose success allowed the Egyptian government to allow khul', giving rights to Islamic wives to divorce their husbands. Before her death, Faten Hamama appeared in the hit television series ‘Wageh El Amar’ (2001).
