Actor Clayton Moore (born Jack Carlton Moore), known more as TV’s ‘Lone Ranger,’ started as circus acrobat during his boyhood, and later became a successful model.
Moore appeared as a stuntman and extra in Hollywood movies in 1938. He initially appeared in uncredited roles in Western films [‘Forlorn River’ (1937), ‘Thunder Trail’ (1937) etc.]. He played bit roles in car-racing film ‘Burn ‘Em Up O’Connor’ (1939), Western-film ‘Kit Carson’ (1940), adventure-film ‘The Son of Monte Cristo’ (1940), spy-drama ‘International Lady’ (1941), comedy-film ‘Tuxedo Junction’ (1941).
Moore played ‘FBI detective’ in ‘Black Dragons’ (1942) and starred in ‘Perils of Nyoka’ and ‘Outlaws of Pine Ridge’ (both 1942). While serving in ‘Army Air Force’ during WWII, he was part of training-films like ‘Target – Invisible.’ After comedy-film ‘The Bachelor’s Daughters’ (1946) he appeared in several ‘Republic Film-Serials’ including ‘The Crimson Ghost’ (1946), played titular role in ‘Jesse James Rides Again’ (1947) and ‘Adventures of Frank and Jesse James’ (1948), Western-films ‘Along the Oregon Trail’ (1947), ‘Marshall of Amarillo’ (1948) and movie-serial ‘G-Men Never Forget’ (1948).
In 1949 Moore starred in many Westerns such as ‘The Far Frontier,’ ‘Sheriff of Wichita,’ ‘Riders of the Whistling Pines,’ ‘Frontier Investigated,’ ‘South of Death Valley,’ ‘Masked Raiders,’ ‘The Cowboy & the Indians,’ ‘Bandits of El Dorado,’ ‘Sons of New Mexico’ and as ‘El Zorro’ in ‘Ghost of Zorro.’
His role as ‘El Zorro’ led to Moore being cast in the titular role in TV’s first Western-series ‘The Lone Ranger’ (1949-1957), which made him and his co-star Jay Silverheels (as ‘Tonto’) stars. The hit and high-rated series got an Emmy nomination. Later, he starred in the 2 films based on the series, 1956 film ‘The Lone Ranger,’ and ‘The Lone Ranger & the Lost City of Gold’ (1958), and made several personal appearances as ‘Lone Ranger’ on TV and commercials. He came to be identified as the character.
Further Moore starred in Western ‘Cyclone Fury’ (1951), serial-films of 1952 ‘The Hawk of Wild River,’ ‘Son of Geronimo,’ ‘Radar Men from the Moon,’ titular role in Western ‘Buffalo Bill in Tomahawk Territory’ and many more.
Moore made guest-appearances in Western-series ‘The Adventures of Kit Carson’ and ‘The Range Rider’ (1952-1953). His further appearances include Western-films ‘Kansas Pacific,’ ‘Down Laredo Way’ (both 1953), ‘Apache Ambush’ (1955), adventure-film ‘The Bandits of Corsica’ (1953) amongst others. His last appearance was a guest-role as ‘Lone Ranger’ in TV-series ‘Lassie’ (1959).  Â
