Cha Seung-won was first seen in the 1997 South Korean film ‘Holiday in Seoul’ directed by Ui-Seok Kim. The following year, he starred as ‘Ji-min’ in the Lee Eun-directed South Korean film, ‘If the Sun Rises in the West.’ The film marked the directorial debut of Lee Eun. He was next seen in films like ‘Ghost in Love’ (1999), ‘Attack the Gas Station’ (1999), ‘Libera Me’ (2000), ‘Kick the Moon’ (2001), ‘Break Out’ (2002), and ‘Jail Breakers’ (2002). In 2003, he joined the cast of the South Korean television series ‘Bodyguard’ as ‘Hong Kyung-tak.’ Seung-won became a recipient of the ‘Grimae Award’ and 2 ‘KBS Drama Awards’ for his performance in the show. He next portrayed ‘Pil-gi’ in the 2004 South Korean horror-comedy film ‘Ghost House’ directed by Kim Sang-jin. The film grossed over $3.7 million at the box office. The same year, he also made a cameo appearance in the South Korean comedy film ‘Lovely Rivals’ directed by Jang Kyu-sung. He continued to star in films such as ‘Blood Rain’ (2005), ‘Over the Border’ (2006), ‘Small Town Rivals’ (2007), ‘My Son’ (2007), ‘Eye for an Eye’ (2008), ‘Secret’ (2009), ‘Blades of Blood’ (2010), ‘71: Into the Fire’ (2010), ‘The Suck Up Project: Mr. XXX-Kisser’ (2012), and ‘Man on High Heels’ (2014).
In 2015, he starred as the ‘Narrator’ (Korean dub) in the American computer-animated comedy film ‘Minions’ directed by Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda. While the film opened to mixed reviews, it turned out to be a massive financial success and grossed over $1.159 billion on a budget of $74 million. He next appeared in films like ‘The Map Against The World’ (2016), ‘Believer’ (2018), ‘Cheer Up, Mr. Lee’ (2019), ‘Night in Paradise’ (2021), and ‘Sinkhole’ (2021). He last appeared in the 2022 South Korean television series ‘Our Blues’ where he played the role of ‘Choi Han-soo.’
