Adriano Celentano, well-known for his dancing and one of the most celebrated singers of Italian music, also acted in several successful movies. His first film appearance was in Italian musical-film ‘Ragazzi del Juke-Box’ (1959) in a supporting role. The same year he made cameo-appearances in rock-n-roll film ‘Go, Johnny Go!’ and musicarello ‘Juke Box—Urli d’amore.’
In 1960’s musicarello film ‘Howlers in the Dock’ Celentano played a main role. Noted director Federico Fellini cast him as a singer in his satirical comedy-drama film ‘La dolce vita’ (1960).
Celentano appeared as a lead in ‘Sanremo La Grande Sfida’ (1960), as himself in ‘Lo bacio – tu baci’ (1961), played supporting role in comedy-film ‘The Monk of Monzo’ (1963), and lead ‘Peppino’ in popular low-budget comedy ‘Uno strano tipo’ (1963). He made his directorial debut and starred in ‘Super rapina a Milano’ (1964), followed by cameo-appearance in ‘Per un pugno di canzoni’ (1966).
Celentano’s titular role as a young shepherd in ‘Serafino’ (1968) brought him appreciation and is considered as his best performance.
Celentano is known for his signature style with distinctive walk and facial expressions. He played lead in further movies including black-comedy ‘Er piu- storia d’amore e di coltello’ (1971), successful comedy ‘Bianco rosso e-‘ (1972), 1973’s comedies ‘The Five Days,’ ‘Little Funny Guy,’ and ‘Rungantino.’
Celentano was writer-director-star of ‘Yuppi du’ (1975) a critical and commercial success which earned him ‘Golden Palm’ nomination at ‘1975 Cannes Film Festival.’ His movies ruled the Italian box-office during 1970s-1980s. He won ‘David di Donatello Award for Best Actor’ for crime-comedy ‘The Con Artist’ (1976) and internationally released comedy-film ‘Velvet Hands’ (1979).
In comedy-film ‘Loggerheads’ (1978) Celentano appeared in dual roles and played multiple roles in comedy ‘Asso’ (1981). His other starrers include ‘L’altra meta del cielo’ (1977), ‘Ecco noi per esempio’ (1977), ‘La Locandiera’ (1980), romantic-comedy ‘Madly in Love’ (1981) and co-starred with Vanessa Redgrave in ‘Sing Sing’ (1983).
Celentano-starrer comedy ‘Grand Hotel Excelcior’ (1982) was the biggest grossing film of the year. Many of his films including ‘Taming of the Scoundrel’ (1980), family-comedy ‘Bingo Bongo’ (1982) and ‘Segni particolari: Bellissimo’ (1983) were commercial success.
Celentano wrote/directed and starred in musical comedies ‘Geppo il Folle’ (1978) and ‘Joan Lui’ (1985). After starring in comedy ‘Lui e peggio di me’ (1984) and ‘Il burbero’ (1986), he was writer-star of his final sci-fi adventure-film ‘Jackpot’ (1992).
